What is the Industrial Technology Validation (ITV) Program?
The U.S. industrial sector accounts for nearly 11.4% of total economic output, and represents more than 32% of the country’s total energy consumption - amounting to $200 billion in energy costs. Industrial companies across the nation are pursuing ambitious decarbonization goals to address these costs and to reduce energy, GHG emissions, water and waste. Emerging efficient technologies are critical to achieving these goals, but risks involved in adopting emerging technologies in high-stakes industrial environments can hinder progress.
To overcome these risks, IEDO’s Industrial Technology Validation Program partners with Berkeley Lab to objectively evaluate the performance of these technologies in dynamic industrial environments. The findings are made publicly available to help accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies.
How Does It Work?
Once a host site and technology provider have been identified, a team of experts assess the real-world performance of the proposed technology by developing and executing a measurement and verification plan to objectively validate the technology’s performance claims. These experts have extensive experience in implementing, evaluating, and verifying a range of technologies used in energy, water, and waste management. Evaluations may last a few weeks to a full year, depending on the technology. Following the assessment, facilities will receive independent insights regarding technology performance as installed at their facility. DOE also publishes and disseminates the results in reports and fact sheets to provide real-world evidence of technology validation.
What Are the Benefits of Participation?
By participating in the ITV program, facilities can access independent verification of a technology’s impact on their sustainability objectives. Berkeley Lab provides the facility with independent measurement and verification and an evaluation of benefits.
